Shamefully Ridiculous

Did you know Hitler was gay? Yep! And so were his entire inner circle. The very architects of the Nazi movement… all gay! At least, they were according to Scott Lively and Kevin Abrams, authors of The Pink Swastika. “But wait,” I hear you saying, “didn’t the Nazis persecute homosexuals?”

Turns out that that’s just what they wanted you to think! Lively and Abrams contend that the Nazi party was run by “masculine-oriented” homosexual men who hid their sexual orientation from the public by persecuting “effeminate-oriented” homosexuals who were in league with the German Communist Party.

Aaaand…. Scene!

A couple weeks ago, I talked about Al’s and my collaboration style. As I said, my scripts leave a lot of the visual storytelling to Al, and he often adds elements that I never even would have thought of.

Today’s page is a great example of this. The way that the last panel “bleeds” to the edge of the page provides a nice visual punctuation to the end of the scene. It’s kind of the comics equivalent of a fade to black. Also, the way that the perspective has pulled back and Rachel and Isaac are framed in the kitchen doorway makes them look smaller and enhances the feeling that they are alone in the house. It adds a bit of sadness to the scene, and I think it’s a great touch. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

Making Do

Last week I mentioned the rationing that took place during WWII. It’s difficult for most people of my generation to imagine that kind of scarcity. I’m too young to even remember the gasoline shortages of the 70s, and my ample gut is proof that I’ve never gone hungry. But it was a different world on the WWII home front, and people had to find creative ways to make ends meet.

Gravatars

Hi, everyone,

Now that we’re starting to get some comments on our blog posts and comic pages, I wanted to take a moment to discuss Gravatars.

We use the blogging package, WordPress, with ComicPress, a popular theme made specifically for webcomics. Both are free, open-source products, and we love them dearly. However, they do not provide a way for readers to select or create an “avatar” image to represent them when they comment. Instead, WordPress supports Gravatars.

In Memory of Harvey Pekar

Earlier this week, Harvey Pekar died. He was seventy years old. For those who may not recognize the name, Harvey Pekar was best known for writing American Splendor, an autobiographical “underground” comic that was published irregularly for over thirty-two years. He also wrote several other graphic works, such as The Beats and The Quitter. He co-wrote Our Cancer Year, a chronicle of his fight with lymphoma, with is wife, Joyce Brabner. He also occasionally wrote essays and did freelance jazz and book criticism.

In most of Pekar’s autobiographical work, he painted himself as something of a curmudgeon, impotently railing against the myriad frustrations of modern life. His stories were often anecdotal, and he would sometimes break the fourth wall and speak directly to the reader. He worked with many artists over the years, including his friend R. Crumb.
