Did you know Hitler was gay? Yep! And so were his entire inner circle. The very architects of the Nazi movement… all gay! At least, they were according to Scott Lively and Kevin Abrams, authors of The Pink Swastika. “But wait,” I hear you saying, “didn’t the Nazis persecute homosexuals?”

Turns out that that’s just what they wanted you to think! Lively and Abrams contend that the Nazi party was run by “masculine-oriented” homosexual men who hid their sexual orientation from the public by persecuting “effeminate-oriented” homosexuals who were in league with the German Communist Party.

Obviously, this is patently ridiculous, and there’s no way that I could do a better job of lampooning it than The Daily Show, so…

It’s not uncommon, even all these years later, for people to raise the specter of the Nazis to advance a political agenda. People on both the right and the left have compared their opponents to Nazis, or to Hitler himself. It’s a particularly ugly tactic, to be sure, but it happens all the time.

But this is a new low. They’ve gone beyond just comparing their targets to the Nazis, to actually claiming that they were the Nazis. They go on to suggest that homosexuals were the most “savage” soldiers, because they didn’t have the moral reservations of “natural men”. It’s a staggering display of ignorance and hatred.

The Nazis were the most evil and destructive group in modern history. They were responsible for the deaths of millions. To compare one’s political enemies to the Nazis only trivializes the very real horror of the Holocaust. And to blame that evil enterprise on homosexuals — one of the Holocaust’s victims — is a new low in gay-bashing.

It’s as disgusting as it is ridiculous.
