A year or two ago, I read a news article about a certain Army base that had started serving kosher meals in its mess hall. I was surprised to discover that kosher food was not usually offered in the armed forces. Maybe years of being asked if I wanted a kosher meal on airplanes led me to believe that that was always an option.
It turns out that Jewish soldiers who want to keep kosher on base usually take up vegetarianism.
