I’ve always been nervous about the way that Walter comes across. I don’t want him to seem passive or weak by accepting the restrictions that the Army has put on him about showing race. So it’s nice to have an opportunity to actually put the question to him within the comic: “Why do you put up with this?” His answer might not satisfy everyone, but I think it makes sense for his character. He’s willing to sacrifice his own pride, dignity, and even his identity for the greater good. I hope that comes across as heroic, but I can see how some might not think so.
By the way, if you haven’t seen Black Panther yet, I highly recommend it!
