A few weeks back, I mentioned that we were going to be contributing to an anthology of stories from Iraq and Afghanistan vets. The book is the second volume of Untold Stories From Iraq & Afghanistan, from Heroes Fallen Studios.

Today I want to introduce Charles “Big Daddy” Meier, whose story we are adapting. After having served in the Navy and holding jobs that run the gamut from sheriff’s deputy and firefighter to DJ and bouncer, Charles worked as a contractor in Iraq from 2003 to 2006 providing security for government sites and convoys. Though the story that we are adapting is a rather humorous story of pest control in Iraq, Charles’ experiences there were not all funny.

While on a security mission, Charles’ truck was destroyed by an improvised explosive device (IED). Here’s what was left of the truck:

Charles sustained wounds that eventually cost him his lower leg, but left his larger-than-life personality intact. Here he is just one giant hammer away from looking like a certain Norse thunder god.

Charles has published a book entitled Letters from the Sandbox, which compiles emails he wrote while working in Iraq. It’s available on his website.

We’re proud to be telling Charles’ story and to be working with Heroes Fallen. Please consider buying Charles’ book, or the first volume of Real Stories, and help support our fighting men and women. Also, Heroes Fallen has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the second volume of Real Stories. Give it a look, and consider backing it, if you can.
