The End (of Chapter 1) is Nigh!

Surprisingly, I’ve written the script for the next scene without coming dangerously close to leaving Al with nothing to work on, as had started to become the norm. The next scene will be the last one of the chapter, so if all goes according to plan, we should be wrapping up Chapter 1 in early July. That’s just over a year after we launched The Specialists! If you’re thinking that a year is a long time to produce a single chapter, I can’t really argue with you. Our story has a very deliberate pace, and this first chapter lays a lot of groundwork. But our hope is that all of the time we’re taking now will pay off in the long run.

Over the next few months, you’ll be meeting a lot of characters that have only been hinted at so far. Our current scene and the next one are focused on the Nazi Übermenschen. And early in the next chapter, we’ll introduce the rest of The Specialists. Actually, the next several pages are going to be packed with new characters!

Nouveau Geek

My wife traveled a great distance to be with me. Not only did she move from Ohio to Colorado, but she left the world of normal adult interests for the world of shameless geekery. Before she moved in with me, fantasy was an escape. Now it’s a way of life.

To her credit, she’s taken the the move in stride, and has made a new home here. Though she misses her home state, she loves the mountains. And while I assume she misses the company of functioning grown-ups, she graciously humors my many fascinations as one humors an overly enthusiastic child.

Hey, Mikey! – A Song of Ice and Fire

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.

— Cersei Lannister

In the post-Tolkien world, fantasy fiction is a dime a dozen. Bookstores are stuffed with tales of knights, wizards, dragons, scantily-clad warrior women and pad-footed thieves. There are evil kings and magical swords and more often than not, a young hero who learns that he was born to fulfill a much higher purpose than his low birth would suggest. At this point, it’s pretty hard to come up with something new, or even a new take on something old. Trust me, I’ve tried.
