Webcomic Spotlight – Star Power

star-powerThere are some comics that look gorgeous, and then the writing doesn’t quite live up to that first impression. There are others whose art may not grab you, but if you give them a chance, their stories turn out to be compelling and worth reading. A comic whose beautiful artwork is matched by an equally well-written story is a rare find, but we recently stumbled across one of these gems: Star Power.

Star Power, by webcomic veterans Michael Terracciano (Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire) and Garth Graham (Comedity), is a fun and lighthearted superhero comic with a space opera twist. It’s the story of Danica Maris, a stargazing lab assistant aboard Sanctuary Six, a space station dedicated to scientific research. She becomes obsessed with what seems to be a mysterious star, but turns out to be the custodian of an energy called the Star Power. It bestows this power on Danica, and she becomes the last of the Star Powered Sentinels, just in time to defend Sanctuary Six — and the galaxy — from a powerful threat.

Graham’s art is gorgeous. It’s filled with crazy alien designs that remind me a lot of Carl Potts’ Alien Legion (and to be clear, that’s a really good thing!). Terracciano’s story moves along at a brisk clip and his characters are interesting and likable. Their contributions combine to make a very satisfying read.

Star Power updates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It’s just finished its second chapter, so there’s plenty to sink your teeth into. Give it a look!

Webcomic Spotlight: The Naturals

The Naturals
If webcomics were people, The Specialists and The Naturals would be cousins with a striking family resemblance. The Naturals takes place in the wake of a First World War that was won with the help of the titular superpowered soldiers. And like The Specialists, The Naturals exposes a darker reality behind the gung-ho facade of wartime propaganda.

Batfleck?

batfleckI’m sure you’ve heard by now that Warner Brothers has cast Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming “Superman vs. Batman” movie. It’s turned out to be a controversial decision. Reactions seem to range from apathy to rage.

Personally, something about the choice just doesn’t sit right with me. I certainly don’t hate Affleck. In fact, I’ve liked him in several movies (though I haven’t seen his most hated films, such as Gigli, Jersey Girl, or Reindeer Games). But he just doesn’t feel like Batman to me. (Neither did Christian Bale or Michael Keaton, for that matter, though Keaton redeemed himself.)

There were some unusual names mentioned in the lead-up to this announcement, like Kurt Russel or Josh Brolin. Those seemed like odd choices too, but they’d at least have been interesting. Affleck just seems… not quite right.

And I’m not saying that he can’t pull it off. Maybe he’ll be great, and a lot depends on the still-unwritten script and Zack Snyder’s direction. If nothing else, maybe he won’t make Batman sound like he’s gargling broken glass.

What do you think of Affleck as Batman? Good, bad, indifferent?
