In reply to eldestdawn. On unix systems it is quite easy: ss for ß, "a for ä, ee for ə, etc. No German keyboard required.

In reply to Jack Of Clubs. Oh, please! I'm German and I hate the friggin' ß thing! It is actually called 'sz' (closest english pronounciation I can think of : ass-tset) and should have been taken to a back alley and shot in the neck decades ago.
