I think that is very much the case, the fantasy of what a person’s belief system consists of, versus the solid reality of what that belief put into action truly entails. A person may openly say they want a person or group of people to die, but when given the opportunity to witness what those deaths would look like (or being given the chance to carry out the act of killing) most will quickly reconsider unless there is some exacerbating factor in play.

Yeah, antisemitism and racism was fairly wide-spread in the US – nonetheless a lot of soldiers were HORRIFIED when they stumbled over a death camp for the first time.

I guess there’s a difference between hating a group and actually seeing somebody take this hate to its “logical” conclusion. :/

While a neat scenario, it seems unlikely. While The Golem is arguably open to changes to it’s mentality, it does at least seem well formed at the moment. The only part of The Golem’s ‘brain’ that is currently lacking is it’s motor center, making it a bit akin to a two ton toddler in that regard.

…okay, just made a question I want answer to now. Two Ton Toddler, terrifying mental image or surprise superhero?

Oh, they won’t be as callous in public, due to the fact they learn their disregard for others bases on minor differences is unacceptable in a compassionate society, but they will definitely do it when they feel confident they can get away with it.

World War II, for all the horror, brought the cost of racism to the forefront of social issues, though it certainly didn’t solve racism. Much like the American Civil War and slavery, the people who truly believed in their own inherent superiority just got more subtle in how they went about it.

Of course, after finding the asylum, I’m surprised even hardcore racists want to be this callous.
