So we’ve kind of established it’s a dream with the drastic scene change but now the question I’m asking is “who is dreaming it?” Hightower, Agnes, or maybe this is the diversion that’s occupying Agnes’s mind while Geist is taking control?

Perhaps my mind just goes to dark places, but is it possible Lady Liberty is manipulating Hightower, and has been for a long time? It could just be me, but her words in the second to last panel sound more like a confession than anything else.

We know her psychic powers are unimaginably powerful, but also that they are appallingly double-edged and quite erratic when her emotions run high.

Perhaps, to her, impersonating the general’s (Dead?) wife is an unmatched way to get some relative mental peace and quiet, away from all the runaway thoughts of the young, the cruel or the scared.

In her mind, it may not even have been wrong to do: she gets to remind the general of happier times, and they both get to find peace and calm in a shared fantasy where each is comfortable with the other and nobody is making any sort of demands on them. It seems like the kind of atmosphere she’d really appreciate.

Maybe I just don’t want to believe Hightower could be going senile.
