lol, you have to be patient with your students. Yes, freelancing. After teaching for five at years a university I found that freelancing is more rewarding. And I like it.

I was about to become a teacher, the kids were cool with me but the old teachers didn’t like my methods. Studies took longer when they should, so I quit to begin torturing computers instead of pupils for money. Funny permanent side-effect of teaching : I sometimes enter a state of a walking library when kids asks too many questions. Or accidentally wall-of-text somebody.

Aside the fact that Walter is a strong personality, Geist was slightly irritated by the unexpected discovery (and – maybe – was unsubconsciously reluctant to ride this host).

It’s very easy why the Nazis did hate comics : in this form, they were an american invention. We had some popular ancestors of comics, for example the illustrated stories of Wilhelm Busch but those are not exactly comics in the modern sense. After the war, people were not happy about the heavy influx of american culture; maybe a scapegoat, as the german culture of the Kaiserreich, Weimarer Republik and the 3rd Reich ended with WW2 and left a kind of cultural vacuum. It took at least until the middle of the fifties until the “Bonner Republik” had created a new german bourgeois culture which lasted until the student revolts in 1968. The generation after the war took over. And comics became accepted; not as good as books but they made it even into schools in the mid-seventies. The rise of french and belgian comics helped a lot; for example Asterix & Obelix were used in latin sessions.

I’m more than happy to be of assistance. And when my english fails me, do not hesitate to correct me. I had a lot of F’s in school regarding English. Though that might have been some decades ago.

P.S. Just to be ABSOLUTELY 100% clear, I am mocking the complete fallacy of this thinking, not encouraging it(Just realized there could be some confusion).

Don’t know about the Nazis or when comics actually made it to Germany(I guess they got a wider audience during US occupation), but comics were received very negatively until the early ’60s or so.

Basically, according to an interview with the woman(forgot her name, shame on me) who translated Duck Tales into German back then, people viewed comics as trash literature, because all they saw were a bunch of pretty pictures wih big word like “boom” and “rummble” and stuff and failed to realise that there was an actual, sometimes even a very meaningful, conversation going on. (Because they didn’t bother to read the speech bubbles…)
