That is unfair Monday-morning-quarterbacking. You have no real way of knowing with any certainty what was “enough”, and neither did Truman. Unless you have been in his shoes, and you haven’t, it is unfair to second guess his decision, particularly if you are doing so on the basis of information that Truman could not have had access to.

It seems they were more afraid of a Russian invasion of Japan and splitting it in half. (Wouldn’t that make for intrigue.) And instead of saving it to threaten the Russians, or bomb Moskow to finish off Stalin and the rest.

From what I can tell one A-bomb was enough and three days is too short a time to recover from such a city shattering change in paradigms.

With that kind of skeptical new management a demonstration is safer than a major loss of the war.
