I believe the two triangles – one pointed upward and the other pointing downward – are supposed to have some significance.
In the folklore to which Max refers, in creating a golem, a rabbi (who had to be exceptionally righteous) inscribed the Hebrew letters corrosponding to E-M-E-T on the creature’s forehead in order to animate it (a golem never had “life” because of course, it had no soul – and only the Hebrew god could bestow life). In order to destroy it, the rabbi would then remove the “E”.
