This is an adaptation of a story by Charles Meier, who wrote the book Letters from the Sandbox, about his experiences as a private contractor in Iraq.]

I tried to preserve as much of Charles’ original text as possible. I added the framing device of the soldier’s letter to his parents, but much of the phrasing comes directly from the original essay.
