This is probably a good time to point out that, since our comic is set in the 1940s, racism, sexism, and antisemitism will all be components of the story. This was a time when schools and public buildings were segregated, and businesses were allowed to refuse service to African Americans. The necessities of war saw many women working in factories and other jobs, but otherwise, they were expected to be housewives and be subservient to their husbands. And there were some Americans who thought that the Nazis’ extermination of the Jews was not such a bad idea, and weren’t afraid to say so.
Obviously, these ugly attitudes still exist today, but they were much more prevalent seventy years ago. The Greatest Generation deserves our respect, but we must also acknowledge their faults.
