Hey, everyone. Hope you all called your moms yesterday! (Even if it wasn’t Mother’s Day where you live!)
The Avengers is still the #1 movie in the US, and it’s setting records. I think most of my friends who have seen it ended up going back for a second viewing. We did, and it was just as awesome the second time!
What movies are you excited about this Summer? For me, there’s only one film that I’m really looking forward to without reservation, and that’s Brave. Prometheus looks really cool, but if what I’ve read about the plot is true (and it might not be), then I’ll be fairly annoyed. The Amazing Spider-Man is looking promising, but I really don’t think the Spider-Man franchise needed a reboot already. And while I like Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies well enough, I’m not crazy about them, so The Dark Knight Rises isn’t really blowing my skirt up.
How about you?

Hey, I just spotted a continuity error. Luke has already been shown to be alive in the present day of the story, yet here he is getting killed in a flashback. Sloppy…

Just a quick reminder that we’re going to be at all-new Denver Comic Con June 15th through the 17th. It’s shaping up to be quite a show! There are a lot of big-name comic creators on the guest list, including writers Gail Simone and Jason Aaron, Axe Cop artist Ethan Nicolle, and the creator of The Crow, James O’Barr! There will also be people from TV and movies, such as voice actor Billy West (from Futurama and a ton of other stuff), three cast members from The Walking Dead, Star Wars fight choreographer Nick Gillard, and Wil Wheaton, who was apparently on some sort of space show.
In addition to having a table in artists’ alley, we will also be joining the Webcomic Pioneers for a pair of panels on webcomics. We’ll have more specific information on scheduling when it becomes available.

Hans loved tower duty. The other guys thought it was cold and boring, but Hans liked his alone time. During day shifts, he’d sneak a book up there to pass the hours (he especially loved books on philosophy; he was currently working his way through Also sprach Zarathustra) and sometimes during night shifts, he’d catch a few winks.
As he watched the snow fall lazily over the camp, his thoughts drifted between how lucky he was that Aldo was willing to trade his tower shifts and Nietzsche’s musings on the dangers of nihilism. The snow seemed to hypnotize him and his eyelids started to droop. But then the floor shook and bucked and suddenly Hans was falling…

This is the last talky page before a big action scene. Next week, the scheisse hits the fan!
This Saturday (the 21st), the Webcomic Pioneers will be presenting a panel discussion on webcomics at ComicFest at the Hyatt Regency in the Denver Tech Center. If you’re interested in publishing your own webcomic, or are just curious about how it’s done, come join us! (Unfortunately, Al won’t be able to join us for this one.)
Our second round of site design updates is complete. We’ve replaced our social networking widgets with the nifty-looking links in the red strip on the right. This takes up less space and also results in a fairly significant improvement in page load times. (If you’re not already following us on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, InkOutbreak, or RSS, there’s no time like the present!)

Ah, now eventually you do plan to have superheroes in your… in your superhero comic, right? Hello?
Yes, hunky mathematician Ian Malcolm, we do indeed have superheroes. I realize that the last few pages have been a bit slow, but we’ve got an honest-to-goodness action scene coming up soon. Keep your shirt on. Please.

In case I haven’t made it clear, I’m an eternally insecure guy, and even more so when it comes to my writing. Walter is one of my favorite characters. He’s one of the few unambiguously likable characters that Max meets on base. And yet, I’m a little nervous about how he will be perceived, particularly by black readers.
I hope that Walter’s willingness to put up with having to hide his race is not seen as weakness. As this page shows, he has his reasons. And I think that his decision to suffer this indignity for the greater good (even if it is also somewhat self-serving) is a show of strength. But then, I’ve never experienced discrimination, and certainly not on the scale that African Americans lived with in the 1940s. So who am I to say?
In any case, I hope that you end up liking Walter as much as I do.

Good day, friends. Your old pal Al here. Today’s spectacular guest art comes courtesy of Kevin Gentilcore, creator of Teenage Love Zombies. According to Kevin, “TEENAGE LOVE ZOMBIES is the story of love, loss, betrayal, rock n roll and of course, zombies. The story follows Guy, a typical teenager in the 50′s and his burgeoning crush on the popular high school girl. It just so happens that something else is happening in town…” Nifty artwork, dark humor, and zombies–what’s not to like?
His rendition of The Golem is chock full of bold lines and clean colors. Big G looks to be on the verge of smashing something, no?. And dig that background! That’s the kind of thing I wish I’d come up with. Kevin knocked it out of the park with this one.
Kevin is–along with Shawn and I–a part of the Colorado-based Webcomic Pioneers. Pop over and check out his comic as soon as you can. Here’s that link again: Teenage Love Zombies. And join me in thanking Kevin for the awesome guest art!

You may have noticed the snazzy new backgrounds for the blog posts. They’re just the first of several enhancements that we’ll be rolling out over the next few weeks to make the site more attractive, easier to use, and maybe even a little faster. As with any remodeling project, things may be a little messy for a while. If you see anything that looks out of place or just plain wrong, please drop me a line, and let me know. In addition to the details of the problem, let me know what browser and operating system you’re using, and if you could include a screen shot, that would be extra helpful!
Also, we’ve got some awesome new guest art lined up for tomorrow, so make sure to come back and check it out!

Considering the unfriendly reception Max has received on base, it’s nice that he at least has Kate and Walter to hang out with.
If you like webcomics, check out InkOutbreak. It’s a great way to follow your favorite comics and discover new ones. (And while you’re there, be sure to follow The Specialists!)
